Como fazer caixas de madeira com caixas de fósforos - How to turn matchboxes into wooden boxes

Caixas de fósforos têm um tamanho de aproximadamente 5 cm x 3,5 cm x 1,5 cm. Portanto, em escala 1:18 eles representam as medidas de 90 cm x 63 cm x 27 cm e assim são muito apropriados para fazer caixas de tábuas de madeira em escala. No exemplo eu montei uma caixa simples e uma caixa de duas caixas de fósforos, uma colada em cima da outra. A seguir os passos:

Matchboxes are of a size of approximately 5 cm x 3.5 cm x 1.5 cm. At scale 1:18 a matchbox represents a size of 90 cm x 63 cm x 27 cm and therefore it is useful to turn it into a wooden box. In the following example I made one box of a single matchbox and another one of two matchboxes glued one on top of the other. The steps are:

1. As etiquetas têm que ser tiradas, pois muitas vezes são coladas numa forma muito fraca. Se eles descolassem depois de ter colado os palitos de madeira em cima, não seria muito bom.

1. Rip off the etiquettes. Often they are not very well glued and they should not come off after having glued wooden sticks on top.

2. As caixinhas internas têm que ser fixadas para ter mais estabilidade. Eu usei cola de madeira para todo este trabalho.

2. The boxes inside have to be fixed with glue. That is for purpose of stability. I used wood glue for the whole project.

3. Escolhi palitos de café usados em autômatos como tabuas. Eles são bem finos, tem 9 cm de tamanho e 0,6 cm de largura. Não devem ser confundidos com os bem maiores palitos de sorvete, colocado aqui ao lado esquerdo para fins de comparação.

3. As scale shelves I chose wooden coffee sticks normally used for coffee or tea automats. They are rather fine, 9 cm long and 0.6 cm wide. Do not confuse them with the much larger and stronger ice cream sticks! For purpose of comparison the picture shows an ice cream stick besides the coffee stick.

4. Aplique cola bem distribuída em dois lados apostos das caixas e fixa os palitos de café. Provavelmente é necessário cortar um palito no meio e fixar como último de cada lado em função da largura deles e da caixa. Não cola os palitos em mais do que dois lados opostos de uma vez. Caso contrário teria problemas para cortar as partes excedentes depois.

4. Apply glue well distributed on two opposing sides of the matchbox and fix the coffee sticks. Probably the last one of each side has to be cut because a multiple of 0.6 cm will not match exactly with the size of the matchbox.  Do not fix coffee sticks on more than two opposing sides at one time because otherwise you would have problems to cut the ends!

 

5. Coloque borrachas para fixar os palitos durante a secagem da cola. Ao colocar as borrachas, tenha cuidado para não desarrumar os palitos.

5. Fix the whole thing with elastics until the glue is dry. Be careful not to derange the wooden sticks when putting the elastics around the box.

6. Apôs secagem da cola se corta as partes excedentes dos palitos com uma tesoura ou com faca para cortar papel e ajusta possíveis pequenos excessos restantes com papel lixa.

6. After the glue has dried you cut the ends of the sticks with a scissor and eliminate possible remaining small exceeding parts with sand paper.

7. Depois palitos de café são colados em outros dois partes opostas, como já mostrado acima. Depois da secagem da cola se corta as partes excedentes e repete tudo nos últimos dois lados opostos da caixa.  Como os últimos dois lados são os menores é melhor usar uma peça de madeira para fixar os palitos. Neste caso se coloque um pedaço de folha de plástico entre a madeira e os palitos para evitar que o pedaço de madeira cola nos palitos. 

7. Then you glue the next two opposing sides in the way already explained above. After drying of the glue and cutting of the ends of the sticks you repeat these last two steps with the remaining two opposing sides.  As these are the smallest sides, use a piece of wood instead of elastics in order to fix the coffee sticks. You should put a plastic foil between the wood and the coffee sticks in order to avoid that they glue one at the other.

 

8. Quando toda a caixa está coberta de palitos ainda são colados estes palitos num angulo de 90 graus aos outros para representar tábuas de reforço.  Colocando estas bem nos cantos ajudar encobrir eventuais irregularidades da caixa.  O último passo seria remover possíveis excessos de cola com papel lixa. Caso quer ter uma caixa velha é somente pintar com tinta acrílica baseada em água de cor cinza escura bem diluída. Tenha cuidado para que a água não dissolva a cola!  As medidas finais das caixas são de 5,5 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm no caso da caixa pequena e 5 cm x 4 cm x 3,6 cm no caso da caixa dupla. As  última duas imagens mostram as duas caixas prontas junto com outras os quais eu pintei com um verniz que escurece com o tempo.

 8. After the whole matchbox has been covered with sticks you glue these additional sticks in an angle of 90 degrees against the others in order to mimic pieces of wood that hold the others together. Posting these well on the edges can help to cover possible irregularities of the box. As a last step you should use sand paper in order to remove possible excesses of glue. If you want to achieve the appearance of an old box you just need to paint the box with gray or black acrylic paint diluted with water. Be careful not to soak the box in too much water because it may dissolve the glue! The final sizes are 5.5 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm for the small box and 5 cm x 4 cm x 3.6 cm for the bigger one. The last two pictures show the two finished boxes together with others I painted with a clear varnish that darkens over time.
