How to make a brick wall model of styrofoam - Como fazer um modelo de muro de tijolos de isopor

No exemplo eu usei um pedaço de isopor de 15 cm x 10 cm x 1 cm.

For purpose of this example I used a piece of styrofoam measuring 15 cm x 10 cm x 1 cm.

O primeiro passo é lixar a superfície um pouco com papel lixa fino (180 grãos por cm2) para tirar brilho. Além disso, o pó lixado entra entre as bolhas e assim desaparece um pouco a aparência típica de isopor.

The first step consists in smoothing the surface with fine grained sand paper (180 grains per cm2) for purpose of erasing possible brilliant shining. Besides, the dust enters into the gaps between the styrofoam balls and thus reduces a little bit the appearance of that material.

O segundo passo é colocar o papel lixa em volta de uma régua e serrar as linhas horizontais sem muita força. Não se deve esquecer os cantos!

Second step: Wrap sand paper around a ruler and cut the horizontal gaps smoothly and without using much force. Do not forget the sides!

Terceiro passo: Cortar as linhas verticais. Esta parte é bem mais difícil uma vez que, os tijolos de um muro são intercalados. Em vez de papel lixa eu usei um prego esquentado com uma vela. 

The third step is much more difficult, because the vertical cuts have to show that the stones are interleaved. Instead of sand paper I used a hot nail.

Quarto passo: Pintar a superfície dos tijolos com um pincel largo. É importante que o pincel não entra nos espaços mais profundos entre os tijolos. Usei tinta acrílica fosca.

Fourth step: The stones are painted with a wide brush in order to avoid that the paint enters into the gaps.  I used water based non-brilliant acrylic ink.

Quinto passo, depois de secar a tinta dos tijolos: Pintar tudo com tinta acrílica fosca bem diluída de cor cinza escura. Assim os espaços brancos entre os tijolos viram cinza escura e os tijolos recebem um tom envelhecido.  Caso quer fazer um muro novo é somente inverter a seqüência da pintura: Neste caso, pinta primeiro tudo com tinta acrílica diluída de cor cinza e depois pinta os tijolos.

Fifth step, after drying of the first paint: The whole piece is painted with dark grey acrylic ink diluted with water. In that way the white gaps between the stones become dark and whole wall  looks old. In case you want to produce a new looking wall you simply have to invert the paintings: Apply first the diluted grey ink and then paint the stones red or orange.
